Aramachi with nearly 400 years of history
In Edo period (1603-1868), the Aramachi district was given exclusive authority to sell Koji and developed as “a town of Koji”. After Meiji period (1868-1912), the number of Koji shops gradually decreased and the type of shops changed. Regardless of these changes, Aramachi remains a small merchant town to this day.
Vibrant Aramachi 100 years in the future
In 2023, Tohoku-Gakuin University will open “Itsutsubashi Campus” at the former site of the city hospital nearby the Aramachi shopping district. With the younger generation growing, the surrounding area is expected to become even more vibrant.
